On 10th October a brand new space dedicated to children with cancer was opened at Butuan Medical Center in the Philippines. On the island of Mindanao access to cancer services is extremely limited, and we are working with hospitals around the island to change this. Our programme is funding key staff at 5 hospitals on Mindanao and ensuring that they are trained in providing quality care and support.
The renovation of the ward at Butuan is a key step in developing the infrastructure and capacity of this site, drastically reducing the distance that children in the northeast of the island need to travel to reach appropriate care. The hospital, and the Mayor of Butuan, have been extremely supportive of this initative - led by the wonderful paediatric oncologist Dr Mae Dolendo who is based in Davao City. We hope to continue our support for improving services for children with cancer in the Philippines and reaching more of the 1,000 children expected to develop cancer every year on Mindanao.
