Alyssa was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour (cancer of the kidney) when she was 5 years old. She had one of her kidneys removed as part of her treatment, and received chemotherapy at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in the Philippines, at the unit led by Dr Mae Dolendo. Alyssa had a very difficult time during her treatment but her mother was very supportive and she is now 9 years old and has recovered well. Alyssa comes from a Muslim family but her mother attends the annual Survivor’s Day church service in a Catholic church in Davao City to show her support for the programme.

World Child Cancer is supporting a network of satellite centres on the island of Mindanao in southern Philippines. Building the capacity of healthcare professionals at these centres will increase the access to diagnosis and treatment for children with cancer on the island.
