Four-year-old Eric and his parents visited Rio Blanco Regional Hospital after he became very pale with a fever. After also complaining of a pain in his pelvis, he was soon diagnosed with leukaemia which came as a shock to his mother, Alejandra.
Alejandra is a preschool teacher but has had to leave her job to look after her son. Eric is responding well to his treatment however he recently developed an infection as a result of his chemotherapy.
Children with cancer are particularly vulnerable to infections, which can be life threatening. World Child Cancer is working to improve the standards of nursing in Mexico, educating nurses on the importance of line care and preventing infections in children with cancer.
With your support we can improve treatment standards and ultimately help prevent children like Eric from developing infections during treatment, increasing their chances of survival.
