Meet Esi

On International Day of the Girl, we want you to meet Esi, mother of three-year-old Baba. Baba was diagnosed with kidney cancer (Wilms’ Tumour) when she was just one but has now been discharged and returns for regular check-ups.

When her daughter was receiving treatment, Esi took part in jewellery making classes put on by teacher Mary at Ghana’s Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

“Being a part of the jewellery group was so helpful, so important. We are not just anyone, we are mothers and as mothers we help each other.”

Esi says by talking to other mothers she was able to share the difficulties she faced;

“The classes help us to make money whilst we are away from home, our jobs and our families but they also help us talk. We talk to each other and we listen to each other.”

Esi and Baba are required to return to hospital once every three months but she returns more regularly to continue to take part in the jewellery course because of the togetherness of the group.

“When we started there were 10 of us but not everyone could afford to keep coming back to hospital. This is not good, but we are a family and we support each other.”

You can support Esi and other mothers buy buying an exclusive, handcrafted piece of jewellery today. All proceeds will be sent directly back to the mothers that made them.
